Amazing Views from Extended Cottage

ECCLESHALL, STAFFORDSHIRE

“Amazing views of the wildlife and surroundings from the master bedroom…”

  • 19th Century Farmworkers Cottage.
  • Re-imagined accommodation providing open plan kitchen diner & master suite.
  • Timber clad two storey extension to the rear.
  • Completed March 2019.

We first visited this property back in 2017 to meet the owners. A cute, if constrained farmworkers cottage on a lane in rural Staffordshire near Eccleshall, the property enjoyed a beautiful setting to the rear, adjacent to fields and offering glorious views over the Staffordshire countryside.

The existing property had previously been extended to create additional accommodation however the plot offered the opportunity to create something of a larger scale, offering more contemporary internal spaces and a re-oriented connection to the adjoining countryside.

We used the form and scale of the existing cottage to create a new two storey extension to the rear, infilling between the existing small rear wing, and the original cottage. This new two storey element dropped down in to the rear garden to create more dramatic internal spaces, with higher ceilings and a more intimate connection to the outside. We re-organised the internal circulation to form a generous new staircase and landing, and giving better access to the upstairs rooms.

On the ground floor a beautiful open plan kitchen dining space looks out to the rear, and spills out on to the new terrace. Elsewhere the original kitchen becomes a boot room and utility giving dirty access to the house after dog walks in the fields. Externally wrapped in timber cladding with eave roof windows giving glimpses of the sky from inside.

At first floor a master suite is created with dressing area, ensuite and dramatic views, with one of the original bedrooms turned in to a luxurious bathroom, and the previous staircase space used to create a more generous fourth bedroom.

Beautifully finished internally with country style furnishings and fittings this truly updates this humble cottage in to a modern, spacious home taking full advantage of its special location in the countryside.
